ADULTHOOD TRANSITIONING

Planning for the Transition into Adulthood

The transition process from high school to post-secondary school or employment needs to be handled appropriately for the best outcome for the student. What is the goal of education if not preparation for life? Successful transitioning starts in elementary school and continues goal-setting into middle school and must get specific and well planned by high school.

The interests and capabilities of each person must be the driver of the plan.  The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEIA) requires that every student who is 14 years or older has a transition “Individualized Education Plan (IEP)” that supports independent living skills, post-secondary education, and/or employment.

This section has resources for transition planning such as the Autism Speaks website‘s Transition Tool Kit to help prepare parents and their child’s path to adulthood. To learn more, visit our downloadable links listed below. Let’s make sure we help prepare students by offering them an Individualized Education Program (IEP)! The federal special education law requires every student who has an Individualized Education Program to have a plan that supports post-secondary education, employment, and independent living skills.
